select Project, Settings, leftClick on DownArrow and move cursor to change
from Release to Debug or ....

Hi Joe,

o I have opened a project with several targets. (This way the target
   selectbox has a scrollbar)
o I have leftClicked the DownArrow.
o I have changed Target type from Release to Debug.

Do you have the problem you describe allways?

Hi Andreas,

This is confusing.  It happened repeatedly 2 days ago - everytime I tried
with several different projects.  I don't know what the deal is, but now it
doesn't fail.  I haven't rebooted or anything.  The OS is WinXP-Pro.

If it occurs again, I'll try to isolate the conditions.
