Hi,

I updated my 2.0 to build 570 this morning and then noticed in the
Xbase++ work bench title [Not Activated]. I have not changed hardward
on my laptop with the exception of plugging an external monitor into
the port replicator so I am at a loss as to what hardware component
the Xbase++ license manager thinks has changed.

The last update applied prior to that was 560 which would have been
done within a day of it's Nov 10 release.

I have this problem from several days ago.
My problem was that I installed and uninstalled the product four times
because my antivirus blocked and deleted files of the installation.
Now always it said "product Not Activated" and I only have this in my first
machine.
I sent several message to Alaska Team.
Regards.
César.

Hi César,

I have not re-installed 2.0 since it's original install back in
October. In looking though the Installation history I have release
554, 556, 560 & now 570. I'm wondering if there is a conflict with my
Kaspersky AV and their license validation process that is I belive
profiles the machine hardware looking for changes.

I'm truly guessing here!

I have gone into the license manager an reactivated it with no
problems but I hate to burn up my installation allowance. I currently
only have it licensed on my laptop but would still like to license it
on my home PC so I can play around with some new features when I have
a free moment at home.

Thanks for your input... Regards... Jonathan

Now other error and not is possible update:

I hope Alaska resolve all problems and we can have the product updated.

However, this new way for the installation is very complicated.

Regards.
César.

Hello Mr Calvo,

Your issue has an additional vector which complicates things. You have not
been provided with a proper product key matching your Professional
Subscription. I was assurred that you will be provided with a proper
product shipment - this seems to got stuck here.

I will care on that.

My personal goal: Have the shipment on the way before end of this
week.......

With my best regards,

Thanks Andreas,

I thought there was something wrong installation as I install the
professional subscription and next it updated to foundation but with the
issues described.

Then,
Do you send me the product on a CD with the correct product key or it will
be resolved in my account for to download ?

Regards,
César.

Hi Mr Calvo,

A new package will be send out tomorrow. This one will have a new
Product key for your professional product. Without a professional
key you will alway fall back to a foundation product after an update.

Important thing will be in your case to Update to the most recent version
which is build 2.00.570. It might be required to activate again in case
you encounter the same problems as other did. This is something for
which we do not have any proof.

Regarding Virus Scanners: It is important the Scanner does not touch
or hook file operations to %appdata%.

Anyway, after update and after you have possible observations, just
tell us, we need to dig into then (which propably will be in the new
year

Hope this helps.

Hello Andreas.
In my account you are put one file of language pack, but I think this is not

When you say "A new package will be send out tomorrow", you mean one sent to
my postal adress or it will be put in my account for to download?
I have sent twice message to you, one with my adress and other relative the

For the postal service, yesterday I sent you my adress for your

Despite the fact that host based malware scanners are almost useless by
design and generate more problems then they solve, I don't think it is good
practice to tell people to switch off any security measures to be able to
install or activate software.

Hi Thomas,

Strictly spoken you are right.

It should read:

Regarding Virus Scanners: It is important the Scanner does not destroy files
or prevent file operations to %appdata%.

Unfortunately this world heavily depends on Virus Scanner quality. Brave new
world.

Just the other day, a obvious virus email (zipped .scr file attachement
with "your documents" subject) passed all our security measures (mail
server based email scanner & antivirus on the internet gateway) whithout
any warning at all.

The receipient managed to open the zip and click on the .scr file (*sigh*),
but since my users do not have enough rights on their workstations to do
any real damage, we are still safe

Virustotal.com had a 3 out of 50 detection quota... I never depend on
snakeoil software, but even putting virus scanners on all workstations
would have been of no help at all in that case.

Hi Jonathan,

We are not 100% sure what happened in your case. With the current
activation tool the algorithms are less sensitive regarding second USB
devices, MAC addresses and others.

I was assurred that your Counters have been reset to the previous
states and I like you to observe the behaviour with the next update.
Eventually we will require to gather additional information then.

In the meantime enjoy 2.00.570

Hi,

I found out, that ONLY my HP Desktop pc AND ( one USB Stick or one 1.8"
USB HDD) had this problem with all Xbase++ 2.0 installations.
My selfmade PC had no problems with any USB devices.
NO PC had problems with WD USB-HDDs ...

After installation of Xbase 2.00 on this PC I did activate it.
When I now used the USB-Stick or the 1.8" USB HDD, and start the
workbench it says "[Not Activated]" ... after removing the USB and
restart of Xbase 2.0 it was activated again !

The release notes of Build 570 sayes, that they changed the hardware
tool to ignore USB devices ... (my HP PC faild again)
Maybe your saved hardware ID is now different to the older one ...

And every attemp to change it or go back to the older version will burn
1 of 4 possible activations.

THATS why I AM AGAINST THIS STUPID ACTIVATION THING !!!
IT DOES NOT WORK !

We are waiting for REAL work from Alaska and the waste there and our
times with this activation thing !

Regards
Hubert Brandel

In fact Build 570 is no more that sensitive to USB device and secondary MAC
address changes. You may be required to activate again after the update but
then the issue you had with the USB devices should be gone.

Of course, Alaska Software simply increased your activation count to ensure
that you are not negative affected by this issue when it first popped up
with the release of 2.0

>> And every attemp to change it or go back to the older version will burn 1
>> of 4 possible activations.
This is a suggestive sentence which implication that this is still the case
with your installation - which of course is not!

>> THATS why I AM AGAINST THIS STUPID ACTIVATION THING !!!
>> IT DOES NOT WORK !
>> We are waiting for REAL work from Alaska and the waste there and our

Your final statement is based on a suggestive statement which in turn is
based on a assumption! I would like to ask you to stay with the facts. I
also would like to ask you not to shout (upper case letters) and not to use
inadequate wording which may be considered offending (stupid activation).

In other words you are free to express your opinion as along as you are
doing it in a friendly and fact based way. But if you start to spread fud,
use inadequate wording we may consider to banish you from the newsgroup.

Truth is that in a ideal world i agree with you. But as a matter of fact,
even in germany we know that around 50% of all mid size companies with 2-4
developers have just one developer license - and share that license in
terms of distributing hotfixes and updates internally.

Bottom line here is a company is there to make profit which can be
re-invested to support innovation and growth. For that activation is
required in these days. So simple it is!

Finally, we are not saying that we are perfect, but we are learning and this
way moving forward.

OK, I did not reactivate, because after the installation it was still
activated without the USB things and still have the problem with those 2
devices. Maybe there would be no problem after reactivating, but I can
live without the USB devices and don't want to risk my "running system"

Here I am not shure with your suggestion. What I meant is that because
if the build 570 will generate new IDs, after install back the 560 this
will need new IDs too. And in this way it will count the usable IDs
down. Of course this is a suggestion from me - and I will not test it !

The activation is an mechanism not a person, so why should a mechanism
should be offended ... and thats the way I thing about it

I did not want to offend anyone, but I am offended by the trouble and
waiting for missing things (german xppnat.dll, doku etc.).
I do not see that my words are not the facts that I see and read,
but if you are to offended, I can live without the NEWs group.

Maybe I should say nothing more about it and do aggre thats bad that

After you have newly activated the product on your machine the activation
will no longer be sensitive on USB devices plugged in or not. At least this
is where we have improved the activation mechanism. Please give this
a try and help us closing this case. Assumptions are no benefit for anybody.

It is offending and therefore a nogo on any newsgroup.

1) Software is made by human beings who are offended implicit
2) Alaska Software is offended which is no human person

No company will allow you to break rules on any forum. Give it
a try on a platforms driven by Microsoft, Mercedes, Bundestag or any other.
Don't do it here.

Again the important points which are (A) "friendly" and (B) "fact based":

should I try this with the offending USBs on or newly installing Xbase++
2.0 ?

Without the offending USBs the Workbench is "activated" with 560 and
570. I only plugged in the offending USB devices today and the workbench
570 tells me again, that it is "not activated".

Hi,

OK, lets try ...

1. I used the Win 7 System software manager to uninstall
(Systemsteuerung Programme deinstallieren ...)
2. I installed Build 570
3. When I start the workbench he knows everything and is still activated.

What should I do to force a new registration ?

Again, I can live without the two offending USB-Devices and if I plug
them in after started the Workbench, it does not report a problem.

Hi Mr Hubert,

I have not given clear advice about the procedure. Sorry for this.

Your System reports "not-activated" and "activated" depending on USB sticks
plugged in or not. This did not change after updating to build 2.00.570,
there
was no way to implement a solution overcoming the situation without human
interaction.

However, with build 2.00.570 in both cases (USB and not USB) asac.exe /i
should report the same hardware ID. If you now activate your system where
the
Workbench reports "not-activated" then this activatation survives USB
juggling.
The system must report "activated" irrespective an USB device is used or
not.

That's why I am reporting it here again, because with me 570 still toggles
between activated/not-activated when I connect and disconnect my external
drive.

Today I uninstalled the "Intel Rapid Storage" driver, and then the

again. (Aktivation with the first release, never had problems on that
PC). So don't do that

Hi Peter,

In the meantime you have been in contact with our Technical Support. In
order to close this case I like to give a brief summary about the reason why
in your case the activation system reports "not-activated".

The Xbase++ activation mechanism depends on the ability to uniqely identify
a physical Maschine. For that the MAC address, the Serial# of the first
physical media device as well as the CPUID and the Main-Memory amount are
used to calculate the Hardware id.

If for some reason the Serial# of your first physical media changes then an
activated Xbase++ Installation will loose the activation state.

In your case, for what ever reason, connecting a harddrive via USB makes
that drive being recognized as first physical media. If that is the case
then the hardware identifier changes, which unfortunately is by design. We
work on a solution for this.

You can verify this circumstance using the tracing capabilities of the asac
tool. From a console window enable tracing by setting the Environment
variable ASAC_TRACE_HWID=1 then start asac with /s or /i. Prefer the option
/s as this will dump more information compared to /i.

In the generated output you can observe that the identifier for the first
physical media changes depending whether the USB device is plugged in or
not.

Hope this helps.

Andreas Herdt

Does this mean that after upgrading the RAM, I have to new activate ?

And the changed activation routine from older to 570 means that after
installing 570 we have to activate new.

In this case it would be nice to update the downloadable installation
ZIP/ISO to 570 to get a new installation with 570 directly and
to get the info how long it will take to free up the installation counter.

Reading the license file I am allowed to install Xbase on 4 PCs
(You may install and use the SOFTWARE PRODUCT on up to four (4)
computers, provided that you are the only individual using the SOFTWARE
PRODUCT.)

But if I reinstall (Windows) or upgrade (RAM or new SSD) one of them, I
have to know how long the counter blocks me. At the first time the
installer sayes "try again in a few days" ... but this never works.
I had to call the support to manualy free up more installations.

Is this still this way ?

Hi Hubert,

> Does this mean that after upgrading the RAM, I have to new activate ?

Changes in hardware modify the hardware id. A new hardware requires
activation. This is what the entire mechanism is about.

> And the changed activation routine from older to 570 means that after

No. Only in specific cases. I am not informed about the excact details.

> In this case it would be nice to update the downloadable installation

The buildlevel 570 is available as an update. There is no installatioin
package available for download.

> Reading the license file I am allowed to install Xbase on 4 PCs

That's true. One license allows you to install the product on 4
different machines.

> But if I reinstall (Windows)

The operating system is no metric for hardware id generation.

> or upgrade (RAM or new SSD) one of them, I have to know how long the

You will be blocked after too many activation attemps within a distinct
timeframe. This is a protection against misuse.

> At the first time the installer sayes "try again in a few days" ... but
> this never works.

The activation servers message in this case is "Product key is
temporarily blocked, try again in a few days or contact Alaska Software"

In a further step the activation server tells you : "Product key is
permanently blocked. Contact Alaska Software"

I am not informed about the timeframe.

> I had to call the support to manualy free up more installations.

Yes, we have unblocked the product key. After that no further issue
arised in your case, as far as I know.

Yes, because I did not change anything to get not "unactivated" ...
and I am not shure if the HD-ID is not the serial from windows,
because the real hardware ID is often blocked.

The truth is, that I do not change anything (even do not reinstall

Instead of not doing anything, we would prefer to learn about
scenarios where the activation needs improvement.

It is true that we are very sensitive in this subject.

There is no use to criticize the activation system because we need to live

Yes, because I did not change anything to get not "unactivated" ...
and I am not shure if the HD-ID is not the serial from windows,
because the real hardware ID is often blocked.

The truth is, that I do not change anything (even do not reinstall
Windows) just because I am afraid to be canceld from activation again.

I know that your staff feels offended by critiks on the activation
system, but it is the custumer to have to decide if the software fits or
not !

Hi Again...

Over the holidays I was using my laptop away from the office and
noticed that it is again displaying "Not Activated" despite my
successfully activating it after the 570 update changed it to "Not
Activated" in mid December.

The only thing I can think of is that in the office I have the laptop
conected to a port replication (Lenovo ThinkPad OneLink Pro Dock) that
has 6 USB ports, a Display Port, a DVI-I connector and GB Ethernet (it
has it's own MAC address).

I'm guessing that it is the LAN port that is confusing the licensing
of Xbase++... then again I might be a bad guesser!

When I reapplied the key after the 570 update it would have been
connected to this docking device... reconnecting it to the device
again does not solve the "Not Activated" issue.

Of course I can still use Xbase++ 2.0 and anticipate I will wait for
the next update before re-applying the key.

Thanks... Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

I like to sum up what we have learned in your case via the Technical Support
channel.

For build 2.00.570 the hardware id creation and verification algorithms have
been changed in a way to make it more robust regarding distinct changes in
hardware. As a side effect in some cases the activation status can "get
lost" after the update to 2.00.570 was completed.

After Xbase++ was activated again, the system reports "activated"
irrespective whether the laptop was dockt to the Lenovo docking station.

With my best regards,

Andreas Herdt

Hi Andreas.
I have checkedthis possibilities:
To disconnect my second disk on my PC and reboot, then Xbase++ Work Admin
says Not Activated.
If I connect again the disk it says Activated.
With other this and Acronis to Clone or Recover the installation of Windows,
then it says Not Activated.
These issues are a big problem, imagine if the disks are broken.
I would want to update from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 8 Pro (Release update,
not a new installation).
I suppose that it will say Not Activated or have to do a new installation of
Alaska XBase 2.X (Other problem).
Regards.
César.

In fact, a new harddrive can mean that the hardware key changes. In this
case

The operating system is not queried for hardware id generation. This should
not
make a difference.

Installing a new operating system implies to install Xbase++ on that
operating system. You would then reactivate which will not affect the
activation counter.

Hello.
The second this is conected internally to a SATA of the motherboard and it
is for all my datas like docs or databases.
If I want change this with other disk bigger of if the disk would be broken,
then it will say Not Activated.
Why if I installed the Alaska product in other disk, only for the windows
and the programs?.

ACRONIS:
Well, I have maked one image of the installation system where is installated
Alaska XBase, in order to restart the installation of windows if I will need
it due to anything could happen.
For example, the disk is breaking or it is impossible to delete virus or
troyands.

When I update Windows from 7 to 8 without a new installation, then I will
say you what was it like me?

Thanks.

Andreas,
I have disconneted the internal DVD, reboot and it says Activated.
I have checked other thing and is that I have connected one empty internal

So, as a summary is that if any change of disks occurs, product not

In my opinion you should consider modifying this and see another way to

Hello again.
I have tried another possibility, of the two memories blocks I have removed
one and it Xbase Work says Not Activated.
I put again the memory module it says activated but I suppose if I put more
memory in the other two free modules in the motherboard, it would say Not
Activated.
And the same if I change the viedo card.
So I have to hope that my PC last long and that I need not change anything
and do not want to expand anything.
Honestly, don´t understand why!
Best regards,

This depends on the HD ID is red out of the real physical serial ID ...
and if you install 2 Windows on one HD. While HDs are cheap, normaly I
(and others) uns 2 HDs with a changing frame to test different Windows
versions. In this case I had trouble with my second HD in the pc, after
Win 8 had it, Win 7 reports errors on its NTFS file system
But I do not know if this is a normal error on Win 7 and Win 8 mixed usage.

Hi Hubert,

Do you describe a potential problem or a real issue with
the activation system?

I red this:

and want to be shure that this ist realy this way, that used harddisk
serial number is the physical one and not the windows serial number.

If this is shure right, I can reinstall my Windows PC without having
reactivation trouble (I hope). By now I have a problem with the PC,
because an strange windows error denies to get new user accounts to work
on it. Thats not to bad by now, so I do not have reinstall by now.

Just to be shure in the future.

To help you to get a better working activation system needs more infos
about it for us

I had (maybe first) the USB problem combined with a damaged harddisk 1
week after first installation. After 3 activations my key was "blocked
for days", but this message still apears some weeks.
It took a while to get that the USB HD pull out and the activation is ok
again ... how should I know this ?
To read here ... the RAM is sensitive too gets everyone in trouble who
just upgrades ... how should he know ?

I can understand, that Alaska ond other companies have to block double
use of software by users, thats not the question.
The question is the way how it was transported to us and the problems
with it. You may have to live with it, we not, we can just use the old
one or sign by feet

I am a user of Adope FrameWorker, the allow 2 installtions per person.
Inside FrameWorker I can activate and deactivate a PC for the use the
app. So when I get a new PC I deaktivate the old and reaktivate the new.
With internet this works in sekonds without staff peoble needed.
After my HD crashed, I got a SSD inside, put the last backup on it and
all works without trouble, the PC was activated without any problems.
The change to my new laptop (the 2. license) was finished in 10 minutes
(include installation).
