Hi Richard,
I use GMail for automatic emails from my application and it is set to
always use SSL so in addition to MarshallSoft's See4xb I use stunnel
as the proxy server.
GMail has changed there setting to only allow SSL connections...

So you need to use something like stunnel (info attached) when you
make your connection to gmail.
