The U.S. Postal Service has an API for verifying (and adding the 4 digit zip
code suffix to) U.S. mailing addresses.

on Mon, 19 Sep 2005 16:47:06 -0500I looked into this many months back. A potential user must apply to the US
Post Office for the right to access their database via this API. My
customer, who manages professional associations and has a mailing list of
10,000+, did not meet their requirements and was refused an account. The
USPS alternate for most firms is a manual look-up to verify address/zip
code. Perhaps their requirements have changed, but the bar was set very
high. |

I will look into this aspect and report back.
