I was not able to connect to this News Sever (news.alaska-software.net) with
my (preferred) news reader (tin). It always hangs when it tries to read the
newsgroup list. I therefore had to use "40tude" from my Win98SE computer.

I do not have any problems accessing other news servers with tin, so I am
suspecting a (setup?) problem on the server side. Any chance that this could
be changed, for example by using the same server software and/or settings as
the old Xbase news server (at news.alaska-software.com)? I would certainly
appreciate that!

Hello Andrea,
My prefered news reader is 40tude (I don't know tin)
I am trying to connect to the news server with it but no success. I have
had to use Xnews
Maybe it is a question of setup. Can you give me the setup details you use
with 40tude ?

Many thanks and happy new year
Raymond

Raymond,

would you be so kind to post that info also here in this newsgroup?
We are still having problems with certain newsreaders, it seems, and
we appreciate all the info we can get.

Thanks a lot,

Hello Till,

he wrote that he was changing port to 0. Didn't work. Changing port back to
119. Then it was working...

But i have tested this to and it doesn't help on my pc?!

Any hints?

I work with:
Host: news.alaska-software.net
Port: 119
Didn't work

But:
Host: news.alaska-software.com
Port: 119
is working for the "normal" groups (not VX) ???

Hi Till,

The settings for the 2 news froups are identical (except .com is replaced
by .net)
Both are using port 119.

The very first time I tried .net, I coudn't connect. Then I tried with
another newsreader (Agent) and it worked.
Then I changed port to 0 in 40tude and it did not work.
I put back port 119 and it worked.

I only learnt of the new newsgroups today, so pointed 40tude at it and
connected straight away without problems.

Could it be as simple as :
The server is called
"new.alaska-software.net" and not
"news.alaska-software.net" as it probalbly should have been.

Wierd..........
I have had no problems at all with this news-goup, but the server name (in
the server tab , of the "property" for the news account) was typed new.+++
I changed it now to news.+++
And OE don't seam to care.

Hm, after some more testing it shows that the new/news part is not used at
all. ???
It is suffisient with only "alaska-software.net" as server.

Mybe this is due to a faulty configuration of the news-server.
Tryed the same om the "news.alaska-software.com" and there I got a

For your information:

We've been trying to reproduce the problems you people describe
with your various newsreaders. So far, we've been unable to
reproduce them. The last attempt was using 40tude which some
of you also seem to have had trouble with. It run like a charm...
Since I'm beginning to lose track of what works and what doesn't,
I'll post the settings we've been using during our tests for your
reference. Maybe it helps somebody or at least serves to
establish common grounds.

Procedure:
 o Add a new account/news server
Host: alaska-software.net (we omitted the "news." prefix
              for testing!)
    Port: 119 (default)
o Subscribe all newsgroups supplied by the
server. As opposed to Outlook Express, this seems to
be a separate step in that a different tab page must be
used to do this than the one that lists the groups.

o Notes:
o SSL encryption must be disabled. Otherwise, the connection
fails. This is the default, however.
o The server does not require you to log on. In other words,
user and password must be blank! Otherwise, connection
fails. Again, this is the default.

In summary, we did not experience any problems. Does this
help anybody or do these settings differ from the ones you
were using?

We'll try the same with tin. It's a free download, is it?

Regards,
  Till

Till,

>We'll try the same with tin. It's a free download, is it?

Actually, it is a UNIX/LINUX program. I use "tin pre-1.4 release" on
"BSDI BSD/OS 4.0.1" -- but only as a user. The program is running on my
internet service provider's computer. I really like the fast text-only,
telnet-based internet experience, especially for email and news groups.

If I connect to the (old) ASTAG news server, the following appears on the
screen, at start up:

>tin pre-1.4 release 971224 [UNIX] (c) Copyright 1991-98 Iain Lea.
>Reading config file...
>Connecting to news.alaska-software.com...
>DNews is in reader mode - posting ok.
>Reading input history file...
>Reading groups from active file...
>Checking for new groups...
>Reading attributes file...
>Reading global filter file...
>Reading newsgroups file...

And the program starts up as expected.

If I try to connect to the (new) ARD news server, the following appears on
the screen, at start up:

>tin pre-1.4 release 971224 [UNIX] (c) Copyright 1991-98 Iain Lea.
>Reading config file...
>Connecting to news.alaska-software.net...
>NNTP Service 6.0.3790.0 Version: 6.0.3790.0 Posting Allowed
>Reading input history file...
>Reading groups from active file...
>Checking for new groups...
>Reading attributes file...
>Reading global filter file...
>Reading newsgroups file...

And then the program hangs, and nothing else ever happens, so I have to
kill the process. It seems like tin does not get any NG names, like the
description: "ASINet NewsGroup" that you use for the "...ASINet" NG on the
ASTAG server, or "NewsGroup for XUGs" that is used for the "...usergroups"
NG.

I suppose the source code for (this version of) tin is available somewhere,
but I don't know where. The latest version of tin seems to be 1.6.2, but
that version is not installed on the computer that I (have to) use.
