DEVCON 2004 not for handicaped
on Sun, 22 Aug 2004 17:03:26 +0200
Hello colleagues,

unfortunately In the last years the DEVCON allways tooks place in the USA.
Because of my handicap (i am sitting in an electric wheelchair) the very
long flight, wasn't possible.
Therefore i were glad, that the DEVCON this year takes place in the
Netherlands.
But unfortunately i must find out, that i couldn't take part again.
Because the place of the conference is an old castle where the knights
lived, and they didn't have an elevator.
The rooms of the conference are in the third floor, only accessible over 30
steps.
Indeed the organisators told me, they would help me, but i think this is not
reasonable to the participants to carry me over 30 steps several times a
day.
This would destroy the timetable between the sessions.
Because i work with eXpress++ and xbase++ very intensitive, it would be nice
for me, to meet the Gurus personal.
In future I want to ask you, to take consideration for the handicaped
persons, when you are planning such an organizing.
They also should have the possibility to take part in this!!

Hi,
why should it be impossible to carry you 30 steps several times a day? May i
ask you for your weight and that of your electric wheelchair?
Isnt there any solution? Now we are working with computers in
high-tec-scenarios and are unable to help handicapped people? I for my
person are willing to help you over this steps and I hope that all other
participiants af the DEVCON will think like me.

Hello,

I have contacted the castle manager, and we discussed the posseblilities.

- There are 3 bedrooms that are especialy adapted for handicaped. Special
wide doors, and special bathroom.
- There is a lift to the first flour so there is access to the Chapel, and
the Knghts hall.
- There is a wheelchair availeble if the owners (electrical) wheelchair is
to heavy for the lift.

- The Library and Conference room are not accesseble whit a wheelchair.
